Tarik Mendes (b. 1992) is a Brazilian multidisciplinary artist and the founder of TelaModa, an art and fashion project created to bring contemporary artistic practice beyond traditional gallery spaces and into wearable and functional forms.
Based in New York City, Mendes works across painting, sculpture, mixed media, design, and layered net and screen-based constructions. His practice investigates materiality, transparency, spatial perception, and the relationship between painting, sculpture, and architectural space.
Mendes founded TelaModa as an extension of his artistic practice and his interest in bringing original artwork into everyday life. Through TelaModa, art moves beyond the conventional picture plane and becomes wearable—appearing across one-of-a-kind hand-painted clothing, handbags, accessories, and other artist-designed objects.
As both Founder and Artist of TelaModa, Mendes has helped shape the project’s creative direction while contributing his own original artwork and designs. TelaModa reflects his broader belief that contemporary art does not need to remain confined to galleries, museums, or traditional formats.
Artistic Practice
Mendes’s studio practice examines the relationship between painting, sculpture, and spatial construction through works that challenge the fixed condition of the image plane.
Using layered net and screen-based materials as both support and subject, he constructs permeable surfaces in which image, structure, and material become inseparable. Repeated layers of translucent netting and mixed media create physical depth, allowing fragments of imagery to emerge, recede, and dissolve as light, shadow, movement, and the viewer’s position change.
This visual vocabulary extends into sculpture, where the same net-based structures expand into three-dimensional form. Across the practice, the net functions simultaneously as framework, membrane, and connective tissue, linking painting and sculpture through a shared spatial language.
Through accumulation, repetition, transparency, and controlled tension, Mendes creates works that exist between construction and erosion, density and openness, presence and disappearance.
His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private collections across multiple countries.
